Community Pride
Community Pride is a program of the Community Health Center in collaboration with the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA). The aim of Community Pride is to address family substance abuse and aid in the development of a healthy family and community environment. These goals are accomplished through a variety of programs offered on-site at Joy Park, as well as the Van Buren homes in Barberton. The Community Pride Program is an off-site based program developed in response to a public housing substance abuse program. The program was initiated in 1993 by the Community Health Center in collaboration with the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority. The Community Pride's programs provide residents of public housing with direct access to substance abuse treatment, case management, medical services, and community development. The program was founded as a national demonstration project by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).
Admission to the Community Pride program provides outreach services to identify public housing residents in need of substance abuse services, including treatment, prevention, and community development. Participants are enrolled via a brief screening instrument that can be provided at an off-site location. The brief screening instrument identifies specific needs for the public housing resident and an individualized case management plan is formulated with the participating resident.
