First Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Clubhouse to open in Summit County
A Traumatic Brain Injury occurs every 21 seconds or to about 1.5 million people per year.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the fastest growing disability in the United States. Each year more Americans will
experience a brain injury than breast cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and HIV/AIDS combined! On Saturday, April 30, 2005 the Ballinger TBI Clubhouse will hold an open house for their new Ballinger TBI Clubhouse at Summit Terrace
in Akron. The open house will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Summit Terrace is located at 697 E. Waterloo Road (Just east of the
intersection of Main St. & Waterloo Rd.) Anyone who would like to learn about TBI or has been personally affected by TBI is welcome to attend.
In 2004 Ballinger TBI Clubhouse teamed up with Community Health Center to find a space for a Clubhouse location in Akron. Recognizing that many TBI patients live at Summit Terrace (a housing program of the CHC), the Community Health Center has donated a large community room that is dedicated to direct support of TBI individuals to enable them to experience decreased isolation and increased personal growth.
The Ballinger TBI Clubhouse is a community based non-profit organization that offers long-term support in a non-medical setting to brain injured individuals who want to regain their independence. The clubhouse operates with a volunteer staff, serving the Tri-County area of Summit, Stark, and Portage.
