RELEASE
BRAIN INJURY SURVIVOR – A CHANCE TO WALK IN HER SHOES
The Ballinger TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Clubhouse of Akron is pleased to host Kara L. Swanson,
brain injury survivor and author of I’ll Carry the Fork! – Recovering a Life After Brain Injury, at their support group meeting,
FREE and open to the public, at 6:30 pm on Thursday, September 15, 2005, at Summa Health Center's Professional Center South Building,
55 North Arch Street, Akron, in the Raymond C. Firestone Auditorium. During her talk, Swanson will provide information and anecdotes to
help attendees gain insight to the anything but mild nature of a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. Fellow brain injury survivors should certainly
attend her session, yet perhaps those with even more to gain are the caretakers and professionals who work closely with them. Civic groups
interested in educating the public about brain injury should encourage their members to attend as well.
In January 1996, a minivan speeding through a red light ended the life Kara Swanson had known. She suddenly joined the estimated two
million Americans who suffer brain injuries each year (statistics provided by BIAUSA.org). With the wit and humor of an Ellen DeGeneres,
the knowledge and experience of a successful businessperson, and a team of professionals supporting her every effort, Swanson packs a hit-home
punch that resonates with survivors, caretakers, and health professionals alike. She provides “been there” insight with practical suggestions for coping.
“I wrote this book because the understanding of traumatic brain injury is limited even among medical professionals, much less the average ‘civilian’”, writes Swanson.
The late attorney, Charles N. Simpkins, at the conclusion of his section on legal direction in I’ll Carry the Fork!, writes, “…Kara Swanson looks up from her injury and says,
“How can I help others?”. I am honored that I was asked to contribute to her book.”
Traumatic brain injury is a silent epidemic, which might occur as a result of automobile and bicycle accidents, sports, falls, violence, strokes and aneurysms. According to the
Centers for Disease Control, traumatic brain injury affects approximately 1.5 million Americans yearly, occurring, on average, once every 21 seconds. Each year more Americans
will experience traumatic brain injury than breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and HIV/AIDS combined!
The Ballinger TBI Clubhouse is a non-profit organization serving individuals who live with brain injury in the areas surrounding Akron. The mission of The Ballinger TBI Clubhouse
is to strengthen individuals and families affected by traumatic brain injury by providing a community base of direct support to decrease isolation and increase personal and spiritual growth.
