Clifford the Big Red Dog, of literary and television fame, stopped by the Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Montrose on Saturday to highlight the services of the Community Health Center, which treats drug and alcohol addiction.
The fund-raiser, which started Friday, included free activities for children and adults, including story times, miniature golf, face painting and fingerprinting.
Through corporate sponsorships, the 12th annual Indoor Open was expected to raise $16,000 for the center.
Children gathered on the store's upper level to meet a 5-foot-tall Clifford and hear stories read by Fairlawn Mayor Bill Roth; Connie Humble, executive director of the Children Services Board; and Diana Zaleski, Summit County clerk of courts, among others.
``The reader becomes much more important (to the children) with Clifford sitting there,'' said Ted Ziegler, chief executive of Community Health Center.
Ziegler said the event generates money for items not covered by government grants, such as toiletries and clothing bags for homeless young adults, and tattoo removal for recovering addicts trying to find jobs.
``We focus on healing the entire person,'' said Chrissy Lockhart, CHC marketing manager.
Among the 40 CHC staff and volunteers on hand were JoAnn Wilsford, director of the CHC Foundation; Rachel Fox; Dr. Kathie Greene, of CHC's Family Practice; Pam Kaiser; Ashley Ely; Maureen Keating; Renee Olechnowicz; Katie Paluscsak; Ashley Wood; and Luke Motil.
Kelly Fogel, of Barnes & Noble marketing, and store manager Tammy Hentosz were pleased with the partnership with CHC, which received 10 percent of the weekend's book sales.
