Nela Manor
Nela Manor is a historic restoration housing project of the Community Health Center Foundation. These 35-units of one, two and three-bedroom apartments are located in three buildings located on West Market Street in Akron and serve as the Southeast Anchor of the Highland Square Historical Improvement Project. Each unit was substantially remodeled to return this historic landmark to its 1935 splendor.
Originally designed as garden apartments in the early 1900's, this complex is designed to provide quality housing to low-income families. The restoration of Nela Manor added historic value to the community, and greatly improved security and reduced criminal activities in the Highland Square Corridor.
The Nela Manor Project was financed through the Low Income Historic Tax Credit program from the Ohio Department of Development. All 35 units were substantially renovated and improved. The physical improvements included rehabilitation of the exterior and interior of the housing units, including the replacement of fixtures and appliances.
The Nela Manor Apartments are subsidized through project-based Section 8 certificates. Over 90% of the current residents of Nela Manor earn less than 35% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for Summit County. The housing complex is preserved for low-income individuals who are eligible for section 8 certificates.
