FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Community Health Center’s brain injury program receives United Way support

The Community Clubhouse for Brain Injury (formerly Ballinger TBI Clubhouse) was awarded a $24,000 grant from the United Way of Summit County. This grant will enable the Clubhouse to expand its services to members by helping them train for and obtain employment in the community. A staff person will also come on board to assist with this expanded programming.

“We are so very excited the United Way recognized the need for this worthwhile programming,” commented Betty Bacalu, director of Community Clubhouse, “Our goal is to provide our members with the tools and confidence they need to rebuild their lives and return to the workforce.” The Clubhouse focuses around a work ordered day where members get to choose from “Work Units” to develop new skills, interact and complete daily tasks.

Established in 2003, the Community Clubhouse is the first brain injury clubhouse in Summit County. The Clubhouse merged with Community Health Center in 2008 to provide additional services including case management, health care, housing assistance, and mental health and substance abuse services to those members in need of extra care. Brain injury is the number one growing disability in the United States, affecting more lives than those touched by HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and MS combined. Especially with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many individuals are left with a brain injury and no way to cope with or return to their daily lives.
