RELEASE
Community Health Center expands programming
for homeless youth
Local foundations and businesses make expansion possible
The Community Health Center and Community Health Center Foundation
announce the expansion of Horizon House, a 2-year transitional
program specially designed for homeless young adults between the ages
of 18-22.
Horizon House is a prevention program focusing on helping
young men and women realize their full potential by fulfilling the basic
needs that keep so many troubled young people from succeeding. By providing
a home and supportive services, such as case management and mentoring,
residents are able to focus on completing their education, gaining employment
and building a foundation for a successful future.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday,
June 10, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the newest Horizon House site- 806 Avon
Street in Akron. Tours will be given along with a testimonial
from a program graduate. Originally established in 2005, Horizon House
serves 12 homeless men and women in three group home settings in Summit
County. Each resident is permitted to stay up to two years and is actively
involved in designing their personal “life management plan”
which helps them reach their goals and move on to an independent life.
Since opening, the program has had seven successful graduates.
Horizon House is operated entirely by donations from
foundations, businesses and private individuals in our community.
The purchase of the group home was made possible by the Sisler McFawn
Foundation, The John A. McAlonan Fund of Akron Community Foundation and
continued support by our founding partners – Brunswick Companies,
Great Lakes Industrial Knife Co., InfoCision Management Corp., and TriMor
Corp.
